You’d think, five years later, we’d be able to put the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where Kanye interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech, behind us. But, it looks like things are being stirred in the Taylor and Kanye pot, yet again, after Kanye released his new album The Life of Pablo.
One of the songs featured in the album, “Famous”, has the following lyrics: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that bitch famous.”
While Kanye claimed on Twitter that both Taylor and his wife, Kim Kardashian, were okay with the line in the album – Taylor’s camp of publicists disagree.
This was their public response: “Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single “Famous” on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that bitch famous.’ ”
After the song was released, Taylor Swift’s brother, Austin, shared on Instagram his distaste for Kanye by throwing away a pair of Yeezy shoes, which Kanye is the designer for.
Then when performing for Saturday Night Live over Valentine’s Day weekend, Kanye was also recorded behind the scenes saying that Taylor was a “fake ass” moments before he performed live, among other thoughts about his influence. We assume this was in reference to what Taylor’s publicists had to say. The audio recording is available for those that want to listed at Page Six.
And this was all before Taylor’s acceptance speech for Album of the Year at the 2016 Grammy awards, where she addressed the scenario in what many are calling a tasteful way.
Taylor first spoke about how she is actually the first woman to win this honor for a second time, before sharing an inspirational take on the situation with her and Kanye.
“I want to say to all the all young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know it was you and the people who love you that put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”
You can see the speech from her own lips below:
And it isn’t over! We’re interested to see what Kanye will do next.
