Mark Hamill, the actor behind Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise (most recently seen in The Force Awakens, the first Disney movie in the saga) recently spoke out about the possibility that Luke Skywalker could be gay.
Speaking to The Sun recently, Hamill mentioned how he gets messages from fans that are “[Asking] all these questions: ‘I’m bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out.’ They say to me: ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
This is an interesting comment coming from a Star Wars cast member, as JJ Abrams (director of The Force Awakens) has said that gay characters are a possibility for this large franchise and there has been some characters in the new canon book series that are in gay relationships.
We’re excited to see an actor speaking about the sexuality of his role as being open for interpretation and can’t wait to see what is coming up for Luke in the yet-to-be-released Star Wars episode eight, coming out next year, where his character is rumored to have a larger role.
